I remember buying the Atrophy demo after hearing a track on WSOU back in the late 80s. I first got to see them open for Sacred Reich at the Sundance in Bay Shore, NY. At that time they were my favorite thrash band, Socialized Hate was the perfect album for that era.
Atrophy followed it up with another classic Violent by Nature.
I was fortunate enough to see them again in 2017 at the Hub in Colton, CA. Hard to believe the joint wasn’t called “the Hole” because it was a pretty seedy venue. While I was buying an Atrophy t-shirt (still can’t believe they didn’t have hoodies available!) I was chatting with their drummer, Tim Kelly who I later saw double-fisting it at the bar… and then seeing him grab another drink at the bar… several times. Guess it wasn’t much of a surprise that during the set he appeared to disappear behind the drums but glad he powered through for a great set.
Atrophy was supposed to open for Toxic with Hatchet but for some reason Toxik didn’t make it and it was around the time of the northern CA wildfires (sadly, I recall reading that one of Hatchet’s bandmates had their home destroyed).
So with the misfortune of Toxik and Hatchet not showing, Atrophy headlined the show.
